The WTS is installed and ready-to-use within a few minutes. A single hole drilled in the middle of the lane suffices to guarantee a reliable and precise collection of data for several months. The drill-hole requires a diameter of 50mm and a depth from the top edge of the lane of 190mm. Furthermore the sensor is recycable so that it can be re-installed after removal.

Nowadays traffic is largely regulated via induction loops – they detect traffic jams in front of road junctions and command the traffic light system to switch to “green”. Due to its high failure rate, the system is often supported by costly cameras whose recordings are manually analyzed at the command centre.
As a result of existent inconveniences, the WTS wireless sensor technology is increasingly being used. Detecting anomalies in the earth’s magnetic field to identify the presence of metallic objects, the sensors can determine traffic congestions in front of any traffic light. Compared to induction loops, the WTS sensor convinces through a lower repair volume and a shorter installation phase. Additionally the Wireless Traffic Sensor is cheaper than both induction loops and traffic cameras.

Parking LotParking Space Management

The WTS sensor is already being employed in car parks to both detect free parking spots and to efficiently organize the traffic within the car park. In metropoleis the sensor can also be utilized for the search of a parking space outside the car park. The WTS sensor technology permanently measures whether a parking space is occupied and immediately transfers this information to a central control unit. The analyzed information can for instance be digitized in a smartphone application to navigate the driver when looking for a parking spot.

BridgeBridge Monitoring

According to a study from 2013, €17 billion will be spent on the reconstruction of 10000 bridges in Germany until 2030. The WTS system is being used as an attractive component to permanently monitor the condition of the bridges. For that, the Wireless Traffic Sensor measures among others the count and classification of passing vehicles, the distribution of vehicle weight to the axes and the distribution of vehicle distances. Currently the technology is employed for bridge systems like single span and continuous bridges and for cross sections like T- and box girder.

Traffic Analysis

Still people are being employed to stand at crossings, counting and noting passing vehicles in order to analyse and control traffic. The WTS system tackles this job at cheaper cost while increasing the precision of the measured information. The reusable sensor, being simply drilled into the road surface, can record the traffic stream over any desired time frame. After the wireless read-out of the stored data, the WTS sensor can be used for its next project. In this sector the system has already proven its reliability and efficiency for several years.
